A Skilled Photographer

      Jamaal is a photographer based in  Memphis, TN. He initially became interested in photography as a hobby during his formative years, as a channel to express himself. After shooting his first roll of film he was hooked. He studied photography at The Academy of Art University, honing his skills and perfecting his craft, before earning his BFA in photography in 2017.

       Although Jamaal works in commercial photography, he also uses his talent to impact those around him. He provides photography for The New Olivet Worship Center and he has contributed two photographic series on homelessness; one on teen homelessness and the other focuses on a group of men living in a shelter.

​

        Jamaal, like many other photographers, first images were of nature. He excels at capturing wild life; large and small, and creating stunningly colorful images of flowers. But he first made his mark in the realm of photography as a portrait photographer, and built his name on his lighting, in the studio. He soon expanded to more ambitious portraiture and ventured outside of studios.  His work showed more and more narrative and he began creating series and conceptual pieces.

      Those familiar with his work are also impressed with his concern for the human condition. For example, his series "Jobs" examines employment and it’s correlation to people’s opinions of themselves. When asked about his work on these topics he said

“I have a passion to create a change when it comes to things I see that are wrong. Be it civil, sexual, or economical, I want to do something about it, not stand by idly. It’s easy to look the other way when things aren’t discussed or you don’t have direct contact with it, personally, but with my photography I can bring images of these issues to people and present the realities of the problems. It’s easy to sweep things under a rug but when things are presented to the masses; the viewer can no longer deny that issues existence without making a conscious effort to do nothing. I want to create awareness about these crimes and bring about a change, that’s my mission.”

      Jamaal is a talented documenter and has excelled in architecture, landscape, live event, wedding, birthday, product, and private function capture. Jamaal E. is more than a photographer; he is an artist that evolves stylistically and captures our world through his lens.
